WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY Congratulatory Message from the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism H.E. Daud Aweis Jama

“Celebrating World Press Freedom Day and Strengthening Journalism for Environmental Crisis”

On this auspicious occasion of World Press Freedom Day, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to all journalists for their invaluable contributions to society. Your dedication to truth, transparency, and democracy is commendable, and your role in shaping public awareness and discourse is truly indispensable.

This year’s theme, “a Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” underscores the critical role that journalists play in raising awareness about environmental issues and advocating for sustainability. As we mark this important day, the Federal Government of Somalia reaffirms its commitment to upholding press freedom, protecting journalists, and ensuring transparency, freedom of expression, and access to information for all.

In line with our dedication to supporting and empowering the media sector, the government is determined to enhance the capacity of our journalists through comprehensive training initiatives. We believe that well-trained and informed journalists are essential for promoting good governance, accountability, and sustainable development in our country.

As you were aware, the Cabinet of the Federal Government of Somalia has recently endorsed the establishment of the National Media Council, a significant step towards fostering transparency and accountability in our media landscape. This initiative reflects our government’s renewed commitment to strengthening the media sector and promoting ethical journalism practices.

As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, I urge the Somali media to embrace their role as champions of public awareness and development. I call upon you to amplify the voices of the marginalized, support peacebuilding and state-building efforts, and uphold principles of transparency and accountability in your reporting.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to journalism and for being the guardians of democracy and freedom of expression. May we continue to strive for a brighter future for all.
